Rodney E Steffy, 83, passed February 27, 2014 in Berks Heim. Born in Reading, PA on October 5, 1930, he was the son of Rodney and Alva (Miller) Steffy. He served as a Sergeant Major for 23 years in the US Marine Corp where he served several tours of duty in the Korean and Vietnamese Wars. While in the Marine Corp he held the following positions: Infantry Battalion Intelligence Chief, Fighter & Helicopter Squad Intelligence Chief and Marine Division Intelligence Chief. During his years of service he earned numerous commendations including several Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star. He earned a BS from Old Dominion University and Master’s degrees from Penn State University and West Chester University. After retiring from the Marine Corp he joined the City of Reading Police Department as a patrolman and eventually rose to the position of Chief of Police from 1970 to 1993. He also served as a school Board member for the Reading School District where he was instrumental in helping to start the District’s ROTC Program. Other civic projects include serving as one of the founders for Camp Cadet, a program for disadvantaged youth in the greater Reading area and assisting with the Veterans Memorial located in City Park. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Yukiko T. Steffy, two sons, Rodney Steffy Jr. and John Steffy, 4 Grandchildren, Jennifer, Paul, Connor and Tanner.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday March 5th at 11 AM in Henninger Funeral Home, 229 N. 5th St., Reading. Viewings will be held Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 PM and again Wednesday from 10 to 11 AM in the funeral home. A Masonic Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday prior to the funeral service. Interment will be in Alsace Cemetery with military honors.
