Obituary for Sidney Symons

Sidney Symons, 98, formerly of Pennside, passed away on December 17 in Phoebe Berks Village in Wernersville. He was born September 30, 1917 in the Bronx, New York to Charles K. and Anna Symons.
Mr. Symons graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of the City of New York (CCNY) and pursued graduate studies at Columbia University. Moving to Reading in 1952, he worked as an Industrial Engineer at Talbott Industries and then at Western Electric, and as Director of Industrial Engineering for Spring City Knitting Company in Spring City, PA. He was also an adjunct instructor in Production and Industrial Management at Penn State, Berks Campus.
Mr. Symons served in the United States Army from 1943-1953, in active duty and the reserves, and was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. He was a graduate of the Army’s specialized training in Far Eastern culture and was fluent in Chinese.
Mr. Symons was active in the Society for the Advancement of Management, the Institute of Industrial Engineers and served as Protocol Chairman of the Berks County Armed Forces Advisory Committee. He enjoyed exercise programs, music, reading and playing bridge.
Mr. Symons was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis. He is survived by his son Howard, daughter-in-law JoAnn Symons and their children Benjamin and Caroline; and by his daughter Barbara, son-in-law James Miller and their children James, Jennie and Sarah.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 20 at 1 p.m. at Congregation Oheb Sholom, 555 Warwick Drive, Wyomissing. Interment will follow in Mt. Sinai Cemetery.
