Lucy Rebecca (Gorgas ) Lutz
Lucy R. Lutz, quietly passed away to eternal life on June 4, 2016 in hospice care at the Reading Hospital Medical Center with her family at her side. As resident of Rittenhouse Village, she comfortably attained the age of 103.
Her parents, George G. and Helen (Witman) Gorgas, lived in Reading. Lucy was a life-long member of St Luke’s Lutheran Church at Ninth & Green Sts., where she was married to Russell C. Lutz, Sr. They were together 55 years before he died on June 4, 1989.
After graduating from Kutztown Normal School (now University), she continued her studies achieving a Master’s Degree in Education. For forty-two years Lucy worked in the Reading School District teaching her second grade students to read, write, and learn the value of numbers. Although in her classroom she was a strict disciplinarian, her students seemed to remember her fondly. As an advisor to Dr. Ralph C. Geigle, Reading District Superintendent, she was an advocate for elementary education in Reading.
Lucy is survived by her son, Russell C. Lutz, Jr., his wife Jo Anne; their daughter Rebecca, wife of David Rittenhouse; and daughter Helenna Lutz; two grandsons Bruce Rittenhouse and Keith Rittenhouse; a niece, Patricia, wife of Raymond Hauser and a nephew, Oliver Landis.
A Service celebrating her life will be held at St Luke’s Lutheran Church, Reading on Thursday June 9, 2016 at 11 AM. There will be a time for visitation from 10 AM to 11 AM at the church. Burial will be in Laureldale Cemetery.
