Obituary for Emmajane DeLong

Emmajane (Emmy) DeLong, 87, of Avery Heights, Hartford, CT, formerly of Phoebe Berks, died August 26th in Hartford.

She was the daughter of the late Howard and Mabel (Ferguson) Delong.

Emmy was born in Reading, PA and lived most of her life in Berks County.

She attended Reading schools until the 10th grade when she enrolled in Dana Hall, Wellesley, MA from which she graduated in 1946. She graduated from Lake Erie College in Painesville, OH, in 1950 and also from McCann School of Business, preparing for a career as an executive secretary. Her last position was at Glidden Paint Co. in Cleveland, OH. Emmy then started her own business doing work for the U.S. Federal Courts and for H&R Block. Emmy loved history and continued to take courses throughout her adult life at Albright and Alvernia Colleges.

An enthusiastic volunteer, Emmy was active and involved in many organizations including Junior League, the Berks County Genealogical Society and the Berks Conservancy, but nowhere was she more active than First Presbyterian Church. Baptized as a baby, the church became a main focus of her entire life. She served in many roles including Trustee, Deacon, and Archivist. She also had the church’s 18th century grandfather clock maintained. All of these activities lessened when her health began to decline in July, 2014.

Emmy is survived by her loving family, sister Grace, wife of Richard Einsel, and her brother Howard, husband of Shirley, nieces Lynne and Heather Einsel, nephew David DeLong, grandnephew Christopher Parles, grandniece Casey Parles and great grandniece Sadie Froelich. She was preceded in death by her nephew Ricky Einsel, her niece Karen DeLong and her brother Charles.

A joint memorial service for Emmy and her brother Charles, with Reverend Rick Hampton officiating, will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Reading, on Saturday September 10th at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may ne made to: First Presbyterian Church, 37 S. 5th St., Reading, PA 19602, FAVARH, 225 Commerce Dr. Canton, CT 06109 or Lung Cancer Alliance, 888 16th St. Suite 150, Washington, DC 20006
