Albert Harold Incledon passed away on February 17th at the age of 101 in his apartment at Phoebe Berks Retirement Community. Born on August 5, 1916 in Brooklyn, NY, he graduated from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute in 1938 with a degree in civil engineering. Enlisting as a “Seabee” in the United State Navy in early 1942, he served for four years in the Caribbean (St. Thomas and St. John) and the Pacific (Guam). He met his future wife, Ann, on a troop ship on the way to Guam, and they were married after the war. Al went back to school to get his M.A., and then took a job with J. G. White Engineering Corp. in New York. An adventurous spirit, Al accepted job assignments, family in tow, in South America—three different times in Venezuela and the last time for five years in Colombia. They returned to the New York area (Ridgewood, NJ) in 1965 when Al was promoted to president of J. G. White. His work as president of J. G. White took him to Europe, Asia, Africa and back to South America, where he met with several world leaders to gain work for the company. He retired at the age of sixty-seven, and he and Ann continued to live in Ridgewood and New Smyrna Beach, FL, and enjoyed travel vacations to Europe and Alaska. About twenty years ago they moved to the Phoebe Berks Retirement Community in Wernersville, PA to be closer to their son, John, and his family who live in Reading.
One constant in his life has been his love of music. Al learned to play the violin as a child, and later picked up the clarinet and alto and tenor saxophones. He played as a young man at the officer’s clubs on St. Thomas and then on Guam. (Ann landed the sax player in the band.) But during a busy business career he had little time to play music. His time at Phoebe gave him the opportunity and joy of rekindling his love of music. He was one of the founding members of the Phoebe Phive, a musical quintet that is still going strong. In the last three years he and his pianist friend Sandy Leidich have given monthly concerts to audiences of one hundred fans in the Phoebe auditorium. Al is survived by his son, John, and his wife, Sari, and his daughter, Lynn Vogl, and her husband, Kevin, of Murell’s Inlet, SC, as well as his two grandchildren, Amy and Rebecca, and her husband, Paul Staniland, and his two great-grandchildren, Aidan Incledon and Ethan Staniland, as well as his dear friend, Eleanor Eberly.
