Charlotte Hirsch, a resident of the Reading area for 50 years, passed away at age 106 in the nursing home of Attleboro Retirement Village in Langhorne, PA. She was born in Berlin, Germany on October 24, 1909, the daughter of Margarete and Adolph Mueller. In 1931, she married Max H. Hirsch and their son, Peter, was born in 1935. In 1939, due to the increasingly harsh persecution of the Jewish population by the Nazi government, including the loss of German citizenship, the family fled to England a few months before the outbreak of World War II. When their application for a visa to immigrate to the United States was granted in 1940, the family came to the U.S. by ship and settled in Norristown, PA. Their second son, Ronald, was born in 1944. In 1948, Mr. Hirsch established a wholesale business in Reading, Weiss Bros. Inc., located at 940 Spruce St., and the family moved to Mt. Penn. Years later, the family relocated to Reiffton. Charly, as she was called by her friends, performed bookkeeping work and related services for her husband’s business. She was an active member of Kesher Zion Synagogue and the Reading Chapter of Hadassah, the women’s Zionist organization, for which she maintained certain financial records for many years. She was honored as Hadassah’s Woman of the Year in 1997. In 1998, she moved to Attleboro Retirement Village to be closer to her son, Peter. In her later years, even as she deteriorated, she never lost her most endearing qualities, which were her smile, her positive outlook, and her seeming inability to complain. Charly was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be sorely missed by her family. She is survived by her sons, Peter and Ron, her grandchildren, Daniel, Joseph, Marten and Toby, and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held at Henninger Funeral Home on Sunday, April 17, at 11:30 a.m. Contributions in her memory can be made to Kesher Zion Synagogue or the Reading Chapter of Hadassah.
