Beloved husband, father and grandfather, M. Herbert Wachs, was born in West Philadelphia on April 8, 1937. He was 80 years old when he passed away on October 7, 2017.
Herb was a graduate of Drexel Institute of Technology and earned his Masters and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University. He enjoyed a 32 year career with Bell Laboratories and its successor companies Western Electric, Lucent, and AT&T. Following his engineering career, he joined the Information Services department at Boscov’s Department Stores.
Herb was community minded and actively involved and engaged in numerous civic activities. His board service included Our City Reading and Temple Oheb Sholom. He also worked diligently as Co-Chair for the Greater Reading Board of Cops & Kids that promotes literacy for deserving young students in Berks County.
Most of all, Herb will be remembered as a gentle soul who deeply loved his family and derived tremendous joy from spending time with his six grandchildren. Herb is survived by his wife of 54 years, Susan G. Wachs as well as his children, Michelle Wachs (wife of Irwin Gross), Jonathan Wachs (husband of Kathryn Wachs), and Beth Wachs Mortman (wife Howard Mortman). Herb’s grandchildren are Julia and Brian Gross, Sophie and Sam Wachs, and Emily and Mia Mortman.
