Joan Arnold Childress passed away peacefully on October 17, 2014. She was 86 years old.
Joan was born to one of Rhode Island’s oldest families, the daughter of Milton E. Arnold and Pearl Graham Arnold.
Joan had been a resident of Phoebe Berks, Wernersville, Pa. since March of 2013, subsequent to her move from Baltimore, Md. to Wyomissing, Pa. in 1995.
She was married to the late Dr. James E. Childress of Baton Rouge, La. Joan was graduated from Russell Sage College and received a Masters of Nursing Degree from Boston University. She resided many years in Baltimore, Md., working as an Instructor of Nursing at Johns Hopkins Hospital and also at Church Hospital.
Joan was an accomplished pilot-and, as the owner of a Cessna 172 aircraft, she had accrued several thousand flight time hours. She and her husband, Jim, enjoyed many flights visiting regional points of interest, as well as catch-up visits to family and friends.
She is survived by siblings, Mary E. Arnold of Clinton, Miss. and Frederick J. Arnold of Virginia Beach, Va. and countless nieces, nephews, and cousins- of whom she had great affection. Most beloved and adored was her precious toy poodle, Tuxie!
Joan was a lovely and gracious lady given to hospitality and will be sorely missed by friends and family alike.
A funeral service will be held Friday at 2 PM in Henninger Funeral Home, Inc. 229 N. 5th St., Reading, PA. Friends may call from 1 to 2 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be private.
